May 13 2010 Salado wins another golf title

For the fourth time in the last five years, one of the state’s best golf teams resides in Salado.
The Salado Lady Eagles strolled to a state championship on Tuesday at the Class 2A state tournament. Playing at the Roy Kizer golf course, Salado beat runner-up Melissa by 31 strokes.
The Lady Eagles won their first championship since 2006. Salado’s boys golf team won championships in 2008 and 2009.
Salado’s Rachel Van Hoozer lost in a playoff with Sonora’s Elizabeth Chavarria and settled for second place on the individual scoreboard. Junior Taylor O’Rear finished in a tie for fifth place.
Over at the Jimmy Clay golf course, the Lake Travis boys and girls both finished in second place at the Class 4A state tournament. The Lady Cavaliers started the day in first place but finished seven strokes behind Montgomery’s purple team. The Lake Travis boys finished 13 shots behind Highland Park but beat Montgomery in a playoff for the silver medal.
Del Valle’s Elena Warren finished in second place at the Class 4A tournament, two strokes behind Frisco Wakeland’s Taylor Newlin.
