Sep 21 2009 The 2009 Bart Granger Has A Very Exciting Finish
San Antonio Reagan HS lived up to its’ nickname, “The Rattlers”, as they put a venomous snake bite on the Hamilton HS Huskies from Chandler, AZ in the 2009 edition of the Bart Granger Memorial Golf Tournament. After the 36-hole first day results on Friday, Hamilton held a 7-stroke advantage— shooting (283-280 = 563) to Reagan’s (288-282 = 570), and seemed in control to win the championship. However, in Saturday’s final 18-hole round, “The Rattlers” struck decisively with 281 to “The Huskies” 290. That 9-stroke difference, therefore, led to a very exciting finish, and allowed Reagan to overtake Hamilton by two strokes and win the event. “The Granger” is hosted annually in Ft. Worth by Paschal HS at the Pecan Valley golf facility, and is thought to be the largest high school tournament in the United States.

Lufkin, El Paso Hanks, and Mansfield took home the 3rd, 4th, and 5th place team awards in the Championship bracket, as they finished with scores of 863, 866, and 867, respectively. Fifty-one total high school golf teams (49 from Texas—2 from Arizona) participated in “The Granger” this year. Because of the excellent field and large number of teams, the tournament is always split into two divisions after the 36-hole first day results are posted. In this year’s Consolation bracket, Houston Memorial and San Angelo Central battled to a tie at 932. It was the first time in the eleven-year history of the “Bart Granger” event that there was a tie for the consolation winner. Memorial’s fifth man score was lower to decide the tiebreaker.
Although this tournament is considered a TEAM event, John Granger (Bart’s Dad) always presents an award each year to the top individual medalist. Also, for the first time ever, there was a tie between Johannes Veerman of Fort Bend Clements HS (Houston area) and C.J. Kim from runner-up Hamilton HS. Both players finished their 3-round total at an impressive 10-under par 202, with (68-68-66) & (68-67-67), respectively. There were a total of 34 rounds shot in the 60’s for this year’s event, with five more players that shot an under par total for their 3-round scores. The scoreboard had a lot of RED numbers on it.
